May is always a busy month. We have several students in our area graduating from High School and College. Congratulations to each of them on their accomplishments. We also will be celebrating Mother’s Day. I hope all the moms and grandmoms out there enjoy their special day and we thank them for all they do. Mother’s day was always a special day. As a household gardener, Mother’s Day always marked the day it was safe to plant our annuals. You could pretty much be sure the threat of frost had passed.
May also marks the beginning of our Summer concerts. This year we will only be having one concert each month. Below are the dates of this year’s concert series:
May 10 Jimmy Wilson Carolina Blue Grass Boys
June 7 Gladson Family Band
July 19 Reedy River String Band
August 16 Asheville Mountain Boys
The doors will open at 6 pm and the concerts will commence at 7 pm. Food will be available at our kitchen at 6 pm.
You will also be able to see our TWO beautiful quilts being raffled off as well as being able to purchase tickets. They are $1 each or 6 for $5.
Our Food Pantries continue to be well attended. On the average 50-60 people attend each pantry and they select food for about 150 family members. We are very fortunate to have both Matt’s Ministry and the Clay County Food Pantry partner with us and provide food for us to distribute. We are also fortunate to have so many community members volunteer their time and service to this endeavor. We average 15 volunteers at each pantry. When the food arrives on pallets, we all scurry around placing the food on tables where they belong. This is a busy time for all the volunteers. We open the doors from 11:30-1:00 pm. This is the fun time when we get to welcome our shoppers and assist them in any way we can. At 1:00 pm we once again scurry around repackaging the left overs and packing them up in a truck to return to whatever group is sponsoring our pantry for the day. We also have folks breaking down boxes and loading them into a volunteer’s truck who is kind enough to take them to be recycled at our dump. It is refreshing to see our community come together in such a way.
We have three pantries scheduled for May 1, May 15, and May 29th.
Ms. Terrell from the Clay County Extension will be attending our May 1st pantry. She is kind enough to prepare a healthy dish made from the ingredients we will have available at that pantry. Everyone is welcome to taste test her dish. In addition, Ms Terrell provides a recipe for the dish she prepares. Shoppers will be able to select all the ingredients needed for her recipe at our Food Pantry.
Once again anyone who is experiencing food insecurity is welcome to attend our pantry.
Our next Potluck is scheduled for May 20th at 6:00 pm. Pack up your family and your favorite dish or dessert to share with those attending. This is always a nice time to chat with your neighbors and enjoy a good meal!
Your Board is busy at work. Currently we are working on measuring and pricing replacement doors for the front entry of our building. Now that the warm weather is upon us, I hope some of you are enjoying our jungle gym with your children and grandchildren at the rear of our building.
Your Crier,
Linda Snyder
